I don’t know about you but I feel like I am constantly paying bills and I want to cry every bill pay day! I know I could simplify my life and cut out a lot of the luxuries like internet, cable and cell phone data but who wants to live without those things?! I don’t know if I could survive! These are a few things that I do to keep the cost down on my monthly bills so that I can still afford the things I enjoy.
Use the cheapest plan that you can
This should be a no brainer but there are so many people that live paycheck to paycheck and have a thousand channels on their TV. Only pay for what you need! It is a lot cheaper to watch a movie on Netflix or rent one from Redbox than to have all the premium movie channels! Same goes for cell phone data, make your plan be for the amount of data that you actually need. Do you really need 20GB of data per month?!
Get rid of services that you rarely use
A couple years ago, we went 8 months without watching cable and for some reason I never cancelled the service. I was paying $80 per month for something that I didn’t even use! I still have never cancelled my cable but we started watching regular TV again (after I watched basically every TV series on Netflix) so at least we aren’t throwing the money away on something we aren’t using.
Payoff small debts and quit using those accounts
It is so much smarter to pay off smaller debts instead of just paying the minimum amounts. Not only will you stop wasting your money on interest but you will have that much more in your pocket each month by getting rid of those monthly payments!
Start caring about your utilities
Make sure that you and your family is not wasting water, gas or electricity. These bills can get expensive quickly if you don’t pay attention to what is running up the bills. Here are tons of ways that you can lower your monthly electric bill.
Call the company and ask for a reduction
So I know this is kind of cheating but each year my cable and SiriusXM (another thing that I don’t want to live without) increase my rates and each year I call them and say that I can’t afford to pay their increases. Since most companies don’t want you to cancel all together, they usually offer the same rate for another year or a smaller increase than what they originally said.
Shop around for better rates at least once per year
This can be a pain but I think its worth it. Why pay double for the same thing when you don’t have to? Each year, I check prices for insurance, cable, internet and cell phone service to make sure that I have the cheapest price possible. Sometimes it pays off and some times it doesn’t but you will never know until you check. With almost everything being on the internet now, you usually just have to fill out a quick form to get a quote, so you don’t have to spend too much time on this. Also, you might look into refinancing your car loans or mortgage if you’ve had them for awhile.
Start working towards being debt free!
I dream about the day when I have no debts! Wouldn’t that be awesome?! This year, Hubby and I plan to pay of $30,000 in debt to start our journey to being debt free. We will have so much more money in our pocket each month when we don’t have credit card payments, car payments and a mortgage! I get really excited just thinking about it!
Do you do any of these things? Have you saved some money by doing them? What is your secret to lowering your monthly bills?
